Job Description

Mō te tūnga | About the role

You will be a key member of the Data & GIS team, working closely with our Land Management teams to support real, on-the-ground environmental outcomes across the Taranaki region. Your work will directly contribute to improving water quality, biodiversity, and sustainable land use by ensuring high-quality spatial data, tools, and insights are available to those delivering land management programmes.

In this role, you will take an active lead in the development, improvement, and support of GIS solutions used by Land Management Officers. This includes designing and enhancing mobile data collection workflows, supporting field staff to confidently use GIS tools, and delivering geospatial analysis and reporting that informs planning, monitoring, and decision-making.

You will work across the ESRI ecosystem, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, and Field Maps, and will have opportunities to apply automation and data transformation tools such as Python and FME to improve efficiency, data quality, and consistency. The role blends technical GIS expertise with strong collaboration, allowing you to translate spatial data into practical, usable outputs for non-technical users.

This position offers variety—combining system improvement, user support, analysis, and collaboration—with the satisfaction of seeing your work directly influence positive environmental outcomes.

Further details on the role can be found below, or for any other questions please contact our People and Wellness team on recruitment@trc.govt.nz.

Desired Skills and Experience

Mōu | About you

We are keen to hear from someone who brings strong GIS capability alongside a practical, service-oriented mindset. You enjoy solving problems, improving systems, and working closely with others to deliver meaningful outcomes. You are comfortable connecting what you see on a 2D map with the realities of the terrain and land use on the ground, and you understand what is required to get reliable, usable data back from field teams.

You will be well suited to this role if you have:

  • A tertiary qualification in GIS, spatial science, data management, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent industry-based training and experience.
  • At least two years’ experience in a GIS, data management, spatial analysis, or field-enabled GIS role.
  • A good understanding of Land Use Classification (LUC), and the ability to interpret and apply it in a practical, real-world context.
  • Experience supporting mobile field applications used by field staff, including managing releases, supporting day-to-day use, and working through change requests for externally developed or custom-built applications.
  • Experience building, configuring, and maintaining off-the-shelf mobile GIS tools (such as ESRI Field Maps), including data models, forms, maps, and user workflows.
  • A strong understanding of end-to-end field data workflows, including form design, validation rules, offline use, syncing, quality assurance, and post-field data review.
  • The ability to translate spatial information from maps and datasets into an accurate understanding of on-the-ground conditions.
  • Hands-on experience with the ESRI suite, particularly ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, and mobile tools such as Field Maps.
  • Working knowledge of Python and/or data transformation tools such as FME, or a willingness to develop these skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality, reliable datasets.
  • The ability to translate technical GIS concepts into practical tools, workflows, and guidance for non-technical users.
  • Well-developed communication and relationship-building skills, with a strong customer and user-support focus.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a collaborative environment.
